Hylobates Moloch
Howletts Wild Animal Park is one of the most successful breeders of Javan or silvery gibbons in the world. At the moment we are looking after 23 individuals across the park!
Gibbons are classed as apes, not monkeys, as gibbons do not have tails. They are incredibly agile and can run across branches with ease or use their long arms and hook-like fingers to swing from branch to branch, often covering incredible distances in one movement.

We work with The Aspinall Foundation’s Javan Primate Project which aims to rescue and rehabilitate gibbons and other primates, often held in inadequate conditions, from the illegal pet trade.
Not only do we rescue these primates and house them at our centres in Java, but when they are ready and confident, we release them to protected areas of forest where they can live a totally natural lifestyle.
