The Northern Chinese leopard family at Howletts are a particular favourite with our visitors. These striking cats are one of the rarest subspecies of leopard. Sadly their numbers are shrinking in the wild due to habitat loss and a lack of wild prey.

Leopards in general are in the odd position of being endangered in many parts of their range and relatively common and something of a pest in others. They are the most geographically widespread of all cats and have a great ability to live undetected alongside human settlements.
