Keeper ExperiencesOur Animals
Our animals live in large spaces which closely resemble their natural habitat. This includes lots of natural foliage and shelters. We never lock animals into a viewing area, allowing them to choose where they want to be and if they want to be seen. Although we work hard to offer a great day out for our visitors, the animals have to come first. This means that you may not always see them straight away. You are more than likely to see them if you approach quietly or check back throughout the day after they have woken up or at their feeding times.
Some of our animals are nocturnal, camouflaged or live up high. Can you spot them?
- The Pallas Cat changes its coat colour seasonally to allow them to blend into their rocky habitat
- The Bat-eared foxes are nocturnal, which means that you are less likely to see them throughout the day. The best time to spot them is between 3 and 4pm, when they get their ‘breakfast’ feed. Book to feed the Bat-eared foxes.
- Snow leopards prefer colder weather. Try to spot them on colder trips to the park. Book our snow leopard encounter.
Our friendly staff are always on hand to answer any questions and to help spot any hard to see animals. Or ask our presenters some fun questions such as ‘What is your favourite animal at the park?’, ‘How many animals have been sent back to the wild by the Aspinall Foundation?’.
Our AnimalsWhere To Eat
For eating on your adventure, there are a variety of options, This includes:
- The Pavilion restaurant, located at the heart of the wild animal park for hot meals, soups and snacks
- Located at the centre of the park is the coffee house for locally sourced sandwiches, freshly brewed coffee and ice cream
- On your adventure stop at one of the picnic areas located at the park, for play parks, choose the picnic areas at the Pavillion
Before You Arrive
Your adventure at Howletts will involve a whole day of walking with no indoor areas apart from our range of dining outlets. With over 390 animals and 90 acres the park is generally flat with even pathways. There are some gentle slopes and one hill on a medium gradient; if you require assistance at this point, please inform a member of staff. The general terrain is tarmac, however some paths have tree roots running underneath them. We therefore recommend that you wear comfy footwear and bring waterproof clothing.
The lemur experience Walking With Lemurs, is a walk through enclosure where lemurs are not confined. The structure has an ‘air lock’ door system. There are no steps to access this enclosure and there are wide doors for access. For more guidance read our accessibility page.
