Unique Animals
Across the 600 acre Port Lympne Reserve there are over 900 animals across 75 species. With so much to explore don’t miss these amazing unique animals on your trip to the reserve.
Our AnimalsCape Porcupine
Our cape porcupines are the first animals to spot. The cape porcupines are part of the rodent family and are actually the world's largest porcupines. When they are threatened they change from mild-mannered to fierce, making a startling rattling sound. Using their quills, they attack at speed, in reverse!
Bush Dogs
The second animal to find is our bush dogs, they are semi-aquatic with webbed feet. They live in family groups of up to 12 members and hunt in pairs. When hunting they hunt for large rodents such as agouti however as a pack they can take down large prey such as capybaras.
Malayan Tapir
The third animal to find is the Malayan tapir. The Malayan tapir is the largest of the four tapir species. A unique feature that the tapir possesses is its fleshy prehensile nose that it uses to grab leaves, however the tapir also uses this as a snorkel whilst swimming.
Maned Wolves
Head to the bottom of the park near Babydoll's Restaurant to meet our new arrivals, the maned wolves. Neither a wolf or a fox but its own distinct species, the maned wolf is more closely related to the bush dog which is the shortest South American canid. They are crepuscular, which means that they are more active in the twilight hours.
